They say to be careful what you wish for because it just might come true and this week it happened to me. A few days ago, I was visiting with my Grandma Pete at her care center. She’s 88 years old and until macular degeneration took her eyesight, she was an avid golfer. She won several club championships and has more trophies than I can count. Some of my favorite memories were driving her golf cart and our Sundays were spent watching golf legends Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. We were discussing Masters week and how much fun it will be to watch it this weekend, despite her limited vision. I told her that I hoped to attend a major tournament someday and see some of my favorite golfers, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler. Ironically, they are Grandma Pete’s favorite too.
The very next day, I received an invitation to attend the British Open and sail on a British Isles Cruise with Azamara Club Cruises. I am still pinching myself! Of course, I had to invite my fiancée Rob, a local golf professional. I consider this to be the best wedding gift ever. We are counting down the days until July 11th. Azamara Club Cruises Quest will sail from Dublin to Southampton on an 11 night British Isles Cruise. We will experience the best of the Beatles, Guinness, Castles, and of course, golf. Ports of call include Holyhead, Liverpool, Glasgow, Belfast, Waterford, and Cork. The highlight will be the 145th Open at Royal Troon. I will be up close and personal with some of the world’s best golfers and watch them compete for the Claret Jug. Of course, I will be cheering for Rickie and Phil.
Azamara is partnering with PerryGolf for an exceptional optional golf package featuring a collection of the game’s most respected courses plus attendance to Sunday’s final round of the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon. Golf along the way includes world #6 Royal County Down, #15 Royal Portrush and #31 Royal Birkdale. Non-Golfers like myself can enjoy an equally impressive sightseeing schedule ranging from famous cities, to castles, gardens and the Waterford Crystal Factory.
I know The Open will be a highlight, but I am also very excited to sail for the first time with Azamara Club Cruises. I love cruising on small ships and Azamara is a boutique cruise line with just two ships, the Journey and the Quest. With a total occupancy of just 694 passengers, the experience is intimate and sophisticated, yet relaxed. Because the ships are just 592 feet and 30,000 tons, they offer passengers access to unique ports that are not available on the large ships and they often overnight in the ports, allowing more time to spend on land. In this case, less is more. Azamara sets itself apart with many exceptional features like open dining; complimentary gratuities; complimentary bottled water, soda, wine, beer, and select spirits.
Although many years have passed since I rode along in the cart with my Grandpa Pete, I will always have fond memories of golf with her. I am sure she would have loved the opportunity to go on a cruise like this and play the famous courses. I will be thinking of her every day while I am away and I can’t wait to come back and tell her all about it.
Travel Special: Space is still available on this British Open Cruise, but The Open tickets and golf packages are very limited. A $400 shipboard credit is included with all reservations.
